Mill villages on the Pawtuxet

Coventry’s industry started in 1805, when Richard and William Anthony built a cotton mill in the village that took their name, one of the earliest mill villages in the country. Over the following century the east end of town filled with mill villages: Anthony, Washington, Quidnick and Harris. Quidnick began as Greeneville, became Taftville in 1811 and took its present name in 1840 under the Sprague family, who built its current mill complex in 1848. French-Canadian and Irish workers filled the villages. The 1873 Anthony Mill became loft apartments in 2012.

What mill-village roofs need

Village houses are often simple gable-roofed singles and duplexes, close to the street and to each other. Many have seen several rounds of roofing over the original boards. A full tear-off, a deck check and new sheathing where boards are gapped or soft set the new roof up properly.

Coventry roof questions

+My house in western Coventry is surrounded by trees. Does that matter for a new roof?

Yes. Shade keeps roofs damp, which encourages moss and algae, and overhanging branches scrape shingles and drop debris. Trimming branches back and choosing algae-resistant shingles helps a new roof last.

+Does a long rural driveway make a replacement harder?

Sometimes. The roofer needs room for a dumpster and a delivery truck. Mention a long, steep or soft driveway when you call so it can be planned.
